Red dot sights and holographic sights are often grouped together because both give you a fast, both-eyes-open aiming point with no magnification. Under the surface, though, they use completely different technology, and that difference shows up in reticle design, battery life and price. Here is how the two compare in practice.

The core technology

A red dot sight uses an LED projected onto a coated lens that reflects the light back to your eye as an illuminated dot. It is efficient, compact and affordable, which is why the technology spans everything in our red dot sights range from pistol optics to rifle sights.

A holographic sight works differently. It uses a laser to illuminate a holographic image of the reticle that appears to float on the target plane. This is the technology behind EOTech's holographic weapon sights.

Reticle and aiming

Because a holographic reticle is a recorded hologram, it can be more detailed, typically a large ring with a centre dot. The reticle is presented on the target plane, which can make it feel quicker to pick up and helps with ranging and lead. Red dot reticles are usually a simple dot, sometimes a circle-dot, which many shooters prefer for an uncluttered sight picture.

One practical advantage of holographic sights: if the front window is partially obscured or even cracked, you can often still see the reticle and aim. A red dot relies on the emitter and lens coating, so heavy obstruction is more of an issue, which is one reason some shooters prefer enclosed red dot sights for hard use.

Battery life

This is where red dots win clearly. A modern red dot sight can run for tens of thousands of hours on a single battery, often years of normal use. Holographic sights are more power-hungry because of the laser system and are typically rated in hundreds to a few thousand hours. If you like to leave your optic switched on, a red dot is the lower-maintenance option.

Size, weight and cost

Red dots are generally smaller, lighter and more affordable across the board. Holographic sights are larger, heavier and command a premium, but deliver a distinctive reticle and a strong reputation for fast target acquisition on rifles and carbines.

Pairing with a magnifier

Both technologies pair well with a flip-to-side magnifier to stretch their effective range. Holographic sights are especially popular in magnifier setups because the reticle stays crisp under magnification. Which should you choose?

  • Choose a red dot for maximum battery life, lighter weight, lower cost and a clean sight picture. Ideal for most rifle and all pistol applications.
  • Choose a holographic sight for a detailed reticle, fast acquisition and proven performance on a rifle or carbine, especially if you plan to run a magnifier.
